About

Our vision is the education of all Australian Rules Football players out there, about the best methods of strength and conditioning around, to best prepare for the physical demands of what is probably the hardest sport in the world to prepare for physically.

There are so many variables that go into a game of footy, that it can become very complex and confusing with what to focus on in physical preparation, and then how much of each different variable to focus on. Do I focus on speed? Agility? Strength? Muscle mass? Acceleration - the first 10-15 meters? Repeat jumping ability? And which is most important? No other sport in the world requires you to be so good (or at least competent) in so many physical requirements. And as a result, there is still much being learned at the elite level with how best to condition for football, and how much emphasis to put on the various requirements.

Much of what happens at the elite level (the AFL) remains in-house, and only sparingly does information and methods leak out and make their way down through the grades. Not only that, but much of what filters out is unusable for the everyday footballer playing in amateur or country football, or at junior level, as their weekly lives are vastly different to that of the players operating at the elite level; Differing physical capabilities, a lot less time availability, lack of access to round the clock physio, massage and chiro just to name a few. Not to mention the fact that when information makes its way out into the public from the elite level, it is only ever in little snippets, and certainly doesn't allow for anything useful to be done with the information, as it is an incomplete picture - a bit like only having part of a road map.

The confusion and lack of understanding abounds amongst the majority of footy players with how exactly to go about strength training specifically for footy, and how exactly this should fit in with club training and match day, in order to bring about genuine physical improvement. The result is usually to either do nothing, or to just do the standard bodybuilding style training that 99% of the guys at the gym are doing.

This is a big problem, because this certainly isn't the way to approach strength training when improvement in physical performance on the footy field is your primary goal. So at Australian Football Strength Coach, our aim is to bring you the the key information and direction you need via 3 key steps;

Step 1: Understanding the key principles of what exactly is 'functional' for football, based around in-depth analysis of the needs and requirements in a game of footy

Step 2: Knowing the key strength exercises - as well as progressions - to perform in order to improve the key movements and abilities required in footy

step 3: Understanding how exactly to program these exercises, in terms of sets, reps and rest, and most importantly how to periodise them over the space of a season and then how to progress them accordingly

Step 3 is where even the best programs seem to fall apart out there. Even strength programs that include pretty good exercises for football don't take into account the all important concept of periodisation or programming correctly with the rest of the tasks performed throughout the season.

We have deep knowledge and understanding of the best methods around and what it takes to best prepare people physically for the demands of Aussie Rules. There is no sport where this is more important than in football, and sadly there is no sport where less is known by the general playing public about how to prepare. A large part of this problem is that when information is given, it is very unrealistic about how much time must be dedicated to these programs, and also is delivered in a manner that is very hard to understand for anyone who doesn't have a degree in exercise science.

This is where we endeavor to do better - and we believe we have - and will continue to do so, by providing the information that takes the cutting edge of exercise science available, and make it both relevant and usable to the everyday footballer, but also easy to understand and realistic to follow.

We will continue to update the information in the books, but most importantly continue to deliver the information ABSOLUTELY FREE in the articles section of the site, with both written and video information. The information in this section of the website is based largely on feedback and questions that we receive, so please email through any questions that you have, or suggestions you may have about material you would like to see.
